Commercial skip will become technically feasible!

Apparently, TiVo will be putting logos up whilst you skip commercials (LA times article here, USA Today article here). People are in a lather about this, but I got to thinking about the technological underpinnings. Out of band data just isn't feasible here, so it'll have to be in-band. In plain English, this means the TV signal will have to contain information marking the beginning and end of ads. Just the hook we need for an automatic commerical skipper that works! Of course, congress will go ahead and make commerical skipping illegal anyway with their silly copyright/IP act.
