I tangled a bit with that recently, on resurrecting an old Avocent serial console concentrator. Of particular confusion at the time was interfacing with a Cisco VPN concentrator (3005)... these have a DB9F on the back, not the usual Cisco RJ45. The great thing about standards is there are so many of them to choose from.
